The Village of Women is a photography series that introduces the essence of Chucha Studios. Chucha Studios is an initiative that aims to close the gap between social movements and our communities by making informational resources more accessible. Founded by Herrana, the movement is inspired by her mother’s legacy as well as the women that raised her.

Herrana’s story begins back home in Addis Ababa, where she was born and raised. She lived with both her grandmother and mother in a little town named Bela. Herrana’s childhood was filled with love as she was surrounded by such strong women. In 2008, she moved to the United States to seek a better education while living with her aunts in New Jersey.

It was in 2009 when Herrana’s life changed drastically. She experienced the tragic loss of both her grandmother and mother. Losing the two most important people in her life was unbearable, especially at young age of 13. However, Herrana was able to grieve in peace as she was comforted with love through her aunts, whom we refer to as the Village of Women. Throughout her journey, Herrana lives by the mindset that she has gained two angels and a whole village to raise her.

"Do not follow others, make your own path.”

“Your trauma does not define you.”

“You are the survivor, do not let anyone victimize you."

Above are some of the quotes Herrana continues to live by, allowing her to take the pain of loss and convert it into love. She intends for Chucha Studios to be a space where both of her mother’s legacy would live on. This means sharing love and uplifting our community in its entirety.
